Craig Stirling is caught up in a nightmare to which there seems no end. But is he dreaming or is it really happening?

Sharron Macready (ALEXANDRA BASTEDO) and Richard Barrett (WILLIAM GAUNT) are worried. Craig Stirling (STUART DAMON) seems to have disappeared after completing an investigation in Hong Kong.

Tremayne (ANTHONY NICHOLLS), head of the Nemesis organisation, is evasive when questioned: “I don’t keep my people on a string... how many times have you followed a new lead?”

Where is Craig? All he himself knows is that he is being held captive somewhere. His prison is a room with a bare electric light bulb and a bed, with very little furniture. Everything seems unreal, and the nightmarish atmosphere is heightened by the bare wall suddenly becoming opaque. He finds himself faced by the Interrogator (COLIN BLAKELY).

Questions rain at him: questions about the Retford case on which he has recently finished work. But Craig has a resilience which is ’way above normal. Time ceases to mean anything, but he continues to resist, despite his food and water being adulterated with truth drugs.

The Interrogator is merciless as he goes through the whole of Craig’s life story, from the time he was born in New York, served in the Air Force, joined Nemesis and teamed up with Richard and Sharron. One trick after another is tried, even the threat of death... playbacks of faked tape recordings... questions, questions, questions... what really happened on the Retford case? How did he do it?

The harsh mental torture continues, and Richard and Sharron can only stand by helplessly. From their extra-sensory powers, they know that Craig is in trouble. And they know that he is near. They try, desperately, to make mental contact with him. The truth dawns on them, and with it the realisation that this is something Craig has got to handle on his own or involve them all and reveal the truth about what has happened to them to Tremayne.

For Craig’s prison is a room in the Nemesis building itself...
