The Champions encounter eerie drama in Wales and defeat a macabre espionage plot. |
 |
A message from a top newspaper man, Nichols (J.G. DEVLIN), takes Richard Barrett (WILLIAM GAUNT) to a remote village in Wales. Nichols has stumbled on a remarkable story and needs Richards help. The cub reporter who tipped him off has already been killed, and Nichols himself is murdered soon afterwardsbut Richard has already learned enough to begin his own investigations. The sensational clue to the mystery is to be found in a rambling old house which has been taken over as a research centre, now closely guarded. And in the house is the body of General Carl Patterson, one of the most important men in the Pentagon defence team. Very ill, and close to death, he has been abducted, and Nichols has discovered that he is the subject of an experiment in cryobiologythe technique of deep-freezing bodies so that they can be brought to life again later. Whoever is running this research centre seems to have perfected the process. The research scientist is a girl named Inge Kalmutt (ANN LYNN) and the man forcing her to work on General Patterson is a stranger named Squires (BERNARD LEE). He is holding her father as ransom. Richard succeeds in getting into the old house, but the terrified Inge betrays his presence. He is overwhelmed by sheer force of numbers and finds himself placed in a container and put through the deep-freezing process. He should be frozen to death in under an hour, but his super-human resistance enables him to stand up to the treatment and break out of the container. The whole pattern of the eerie drama takes shape as it is revealed that Squires is a man who, in his own words, is selling immortality. The presence of General Pattersons body is part of a fantastic and macabre espionage plot. Patterson was the one man who knew the entire United States defence system. While alive, he was protected day and night, but there is no security risk involving a dead man. However, if Inge Kalmutts experiments are successful, his body can be brought out of the deep freeze and he can be revived sufficiently to make him talk. The government Squires is working for will be very interested... Meanwhile, Nemesis boss Tremayne (ANTHONY NICHOLLS) has linked the disappearances of Richard and the General, and its known that Richard has gone to Wales. Craig Stirling (STUART DAMON) and Sharron (ALEXANDRA BASTEDO) follow him there, and arrive just in time to give Richard a helping hand when he very much needs it. |
