The Gun-Runners

Murder in the Burmese jungle takes the Champions into a danger-fraught gun-running mystery.

A war-time cache of Japanese arms is discovered in the Burmese jungle, but the recovery team sent to collect them are massacred. With the guns now presumably on the open market, the Nemesis organisation sends Craig Stirling (STUART DAMON), Sharron Macready (ALEXANDRA BASTEDO) and Richard Barrett (WILLIAM GAUNT) to investigate.

The arrival in Burma of an notorious arms dealer named Hartington (WILLIAM FRANKLIN) suggests that he may well be involved, but recognition of Craig as an official investigator threatens his plans. Craig finds himself trapped in a warehouse while following up a lead. Knocked unconscious when a packing case is pushed on to him, he is imprisoned in a cellar.

Sharron—in the background all the time with Richard, both of them posing as tourists—reacts with extra-sensory intuition, but the only “picture” she receives is of Craig hurt in a warehouse. Finding the warehouse is another matter. By the time she and Richard succeed in reaching it, Craig’s physical prowess has enabled him to break out.

They have one clue to follow up: the murder of an exporter. The “machine tools” he was exporting may well be on a ’plane which will be making Brussels its first stop.

Nemesis is warned, but the Brussels police and airport authorities are tricked. The ’plane gets away. Its route, however, is tracked, and its destination pin-pointed to a town in Central Africa. The Champions arrive there, only to find that contact with the ’plane was lost and it has not arrived. But now there seems little doubt that the consignment is destined for a country in the Northern Territory where a rebellion has been building up against the Central Government. With arms, the extremists will try to call the tune.

But where is the ’plane?

The Champions set out on what appears to be a hopeless search in the jungle, following the direction the ’plane should have taken. They find it wrecked, but also find themselves captured by Hartington.

Hartington underestimates their powers, however. Their escape is a prelude to ensuring that the arms will never reach their destination...
