Danger in the desert faces the Champions when they escort a reluctant Bey to his strife-torn North African country.

El Hammi has never been the most stable North African state, and it is now on the verge of anarchy. Internal strife threatens civil war, and matters have been brought to a head by the attempted assassination of its President (ROGER DELGADO).

Tremayne (ANTHONY NICHOLLS), the Nemesis Chief, believes that whoever was responsible is someone who doesn’t want peace in El Hammi, which not only has large deposits of cobalt but greedy neighbours.

It is in the interests of international peace to keep the country stable, and the best hope for this would be the return of the young Bey (JEREMY BRETT)—if this could be achieved. The Bey is having far too good a time as a man-about-town in Rome to want to assume responsibility, and is being financed to keep away by the ambitious Said (NIK ZARAN), whose organisation is responsible for keeping El Hammi in a state of turmoil.

Craig (STUART DAMON) and Sharron (ALEXANDRA BASTEDO) are instructed to go to Rome, with Sharron in the sort of provocative outfit calculated to catch the Bey’s roving eye, which she does as an uninvited guest at a party he is throwing. Richard (WILLIAM GAUNT) is sent to El Hammi, where the Nemesis plan is outlined to the now-recovered President, with deliberately placed misinformation of the route planned for the return of the Bey. As Richard has surmised, the conversation is being taped, and the information passed on to Said.

The Bey refuses point-blank to return to El Hammi. Craig and Sharron therefore abduct him and take off in a chartered ’plane. But they run into trouble and have to land at a desert oilrig staging post where they manage to hi-jack a truck and continue the journey. The Bey gradually comes around to accept his responsibilities, but it begins to look as though it’s too late. Said’s influence is far-reaching. It spreads through the desert, and the remainder of the journey is very hazardous indeed...
